Think Spring (#2)! Yard Art!

Well, we'll try this again! The weather was doing so great in the northeast, but  recently winter reared up its head and there have been cold temperatures and even SNOW! Noooooooo!

March was so mild and everyone pretty much thought that spring was here, but oh well, we New Yorkers are used to dealing with storms and change.

Thought I'd post some photos that might bring a little sunshine to your day.

Even if you are not into gardening you might want to add some fun things that will attract a visitor's eye and bring some color or whimsy into your yard.

Yard Art can be in the form of colorful, unusual containers, re-purposed household items, or recycled goods from the thrift store. I've also found some very unusual and colorful pieces at Hobby Lobby, JoAnn Fabric, Michaels, and other craft stores. Or you can shop online. You can do a search on Google, type in 'Yard Art', and if you select 'Images' you'll find an array of items.

Birdhouses can also add some interesting forms to your gardens and yard as well as being beneficial to the birds. Bird baths are another example of adding a point of interest to your yard.

Or you might just need a focal point to draw attention away from a not-so-nice area of either your back yard or a neighboring distraction.

I also like the use of banners in a garden or yard. It's a quick way to add a splash of color where you want to brighten up a spot.

And don't forget the use of colorful containers:

Decorative items can also serve a dual purpose!

These are sold as bee "houses".

you should smell like dirt."

  1. I think Western New York wins the prize on yard art with Garden Walk Buffalo and all the garden walks and fests here during the summer. I can see it has moved east as well. The tires are really cute and quite whimsical. They would win in our Lewiston Gardenfest container contest. The prizes are worth it too.

    1. After seeing all your beautiful pictures on your blog post of the Garden Walk Buffalo, I'm going to try to get there this year. They really do it up in a fantastic way and it's so awesome of them to open it up to the public.
I thought the tires were really cute, too!

    1. Yes, you have some beautiful Yard Art and I always enjoy your photos! I hope you're able to locate a garden head planter like that. I saw that one pictured above at the Garden Show in Winter Garden, Florida. I'll try to see if I can find out the name of the vendor that was selling them and forward you the information.

  4. Oh, I love your Peter Pan statue, absolutely gorgeous. Lots of nice ideas in your post, I have been looking for something for my new garden but find it hard to get something for a budget my wallet agrees with! In the end I turned upside down some of the big roots I dug out and used them as a small stumpery with ferns and woodland plants – absolutely free :-)

    1. Thank you, Helene. The photo I took of the Peter Pan statue was taken at a public garden in Virginia. I just loved it too.
Your stumpery sounds wonderful with the ferns and woodland plants. A very nice garden for fairies and 'kindred spirits'! And fairy gardens have become so popular recently, too. Thanks for commenting.

  5. I love garden art...clever and creative with great whimsy. You have some great examples here Sue. We always pay big for a warm March...give me a regular winter with loads of protective snow and a normal slow melt through mid-April.

    1. Thank you, Donna. I agree with you about a regular winter with lots of snow cover with a normal melt. It just makes everyone too anxious when we are teased with warm weather through the winter months.
